Chevrolet Captiva

• The engine makes 144 hp with peak torque of 249 Nm available. That's a broad torque band on paper. The turbo provides decent low-end response for city driving. Accelerating from traffic lights feels adequate, but merging onto highways requires planning. So the engine is a mix of power and performance but not really outstanding.
• The CVT appears to be a big weak link in the SUV. It’s programmed to give you better fuel efficiency over responsiveness, which is not a bad goal. Floor the throttle, and there’s a noticeable delay before power arrives. The transmission looks for the right ratio during acceleration. You hear the engine revving, but the SUV doesn’t accelerate proportionally. This is typical CVT behaviour, but it’s particularly obvious here.
• Ground clearance is 180 mm, which should be really enough for Saudi speed bumps and parking lot kerbs. And keep in mind that this is not a typical off-road SUV. The front-wheel drive setup with modest ground clearance limits capability on anything beyond paved roads.
• The suspension is MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear; one can easily say it is a basic setup. It handles smooth highways acceptably, but on rougher or not-so-good surfaces that harshness gets into the cabin. Body roll can be felt during cornering. The steering feels light for parking, but you may get the impression it provides minimal feedback at speed.
• As far as mileage goes, it is actually reasonable for an SUV of this size. The 1.5L turbo is not pushing much power, and the CVT is efficient when not stressed. Keeping this in mind, expect around 10-12 km/L in mixed driving. The 52-litre tank gives a decent range between fill-ups.

The Reality: 

• The turbo engine produces adequate power but lacks the refinement of competitors' engines; this is a visible mark of the Captiva. It gets noisy under hard acceleration. Honda and Toyota offer smoother, more refined engines in this segment, like the Japanese are always known for. 
• The CVT could be a little irritating in traffic, as it hesitates during quick throttle inputs. It rubber-bands during acceleration and sometimes creates a disconnected feeling between throttle input and vehicle response. If you have driven a good automatic transmission, this CVT may certainly feel underwhelming to you.
• On the highway, merging requires commitment, and you need to anticipate gaps in traffic. The combination of modest power and CVT lag means you can’t execute quick merges confidently. This matters on Saudi highways where traffic moves quickly.
• There is a noticeable soft and floaty feeling to the chassis, with excessive body roll in corners. The suspension is tuned for comfort over handling; some buyers may feel it’s a compromise if they’re looking for a plush ride quality.

• On maintained highways, the ride is quite enjoyable, with suspension absorbing gentle roughness without trouble. The wind noise is noticeable above 100 kph but tolerable. Road noise increases with speed but is mostly manageable.
• Being an SUV, that means the high seating position provides excellent visibility over sedans and smaller SUVs. Parking sensors and a 360-degree camera on the Premier make tight parking manageable.
• CVT shifts perfectly during gentle acceleration. City driving at lower speeds is good for the transmission weaknesses. While the turbo provides enough torque for stop-and-go traffic.
• Second-row sliding seats give genuine flexibility and more legroom or cargo space as needed. Real advantage over competitors' fixed second rows.

The Issues That Matter:

• Excessive body roll during cornering undermines confidence. Highway interchanges reveal unsettled handling that passengers feel.
• You feel the steering provides zero feedback. The fully isolated electric system optimised for parking, not engaging driving so that needed to be highlighted
• Ride quality on rough roads is not the best. The torsion beam rear suspension transmits harshness; it is cheaper than an independent setup but inferior for comfort.
• Engine noise bothers during acceleration. Four-cylinder sounds noticeable when revved. Overall cabin insulation is just fine, not the best. 
• Brakes feel harder initially with excessive pedal travel before a firm bite engages. All of them are not certainly dealbreakers but nonetheless should be pointed out. 

• You get three rows with a seven-seat configuration. The row slides 150 mm, balancing legroom versus cargo. Most adults feel quite relaxed and comfortable, but in the third row, they certainly won’t. It is good for kids mostly.
• The cockpit has a dual display, a 10.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment, and a 7-inch digital cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrate smoothly, something you will like. 
• The Premier variant gets leatherette seats with eight-way power driver adjustment. LT and LS use cloth and adequate support for moderate durations; long drives reveal limited lumbar support.
• The dual-zone climate control is on the LT and Premier. Rear AC vents are essential for Saudi heat. The panoramic sunroof on the Premier provides much-needed airiness but increases heat.
• The cabin storage feels quite practical with deep door pockets, centre console bins, cupholders throughout, and an overhead sunglass holder.
• Cargo capacity is a genuine strength, at 117 litres with all seats up, 1,000 litres with the third row folded, and 1,710 maximum. floor eases lifting, and the powered tailgate on the Premier is a great help.
• The overall dimensions of the SUVs are 4,737 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,719 mm tall, and 2,765 mm wheelbase, which qualifies them as proper mid-size crossovers.

What's Missing:

• You can’t miss the hard plastics throughout, which sound hollow when tapped. That means there has been a clear focus on saving costs. 
• A panoramic sunroof increases heat load dramatically in the Saudi sun, forcing AC to work harder and consuming more fuel.
• The third row is a 5+2 emergency configuration. Adults lack legroom, thigh support, and headroom.
• Leatherette cracks faster than leather under constant sun exposure.
• The second-row sliding creates a compromise between passenger comfort and cargo space, never both optimised simultaneously.

What's Standard:

• Six airbags on the LT and Premier: driver, passenger, front side, and curtain. The LS base gets only four, dropping curtain protection, and is undoubtedly a significant safety downgrade.
• ABS prevents wheel lockup. Electronic Stability Control maintains directional stability. Traction control stops wheelspin. Hill-start assist prevents rollback.
• Tyre pressure monitoring displays current pressures before issues become dangerous. Cruise control reduces highway fatigue.
• Rear parking camera standard across trims. Premier adds a 360-degree surround view, useful in tight Saudi mall lots dominated by large SUVs.
• ISOFIX anchors secure child seats in the second row. Child safety locks prevent door opening. Central locking with keyless entry on LT and Premier; LS requires key insertion.

Advanced Features on Higher Trims:

• LT and Premier get forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, preventing rear-end collisions.
• Lane departure warning alerts on drift. Blind-spot monitoring detects hidden vehicles.
• Adaptive cruise control maintains distance from traffic ahead, reducing highway fatigue.

What is Missing:

• No independent crash test data exists for this Middle East-spec Captiva. 
• The base LS trim's four airbags inadequately protect occupants, something buyers expect these days on such an SUV. The curtain airbags for side impacts are cost-cutting that compromises safety for minimal price difference.
• Zero advanced driver assistance on the base LS—no collision warning, emergency braking, or blind-spot monitoring that competitors now standard-equip.
• A limited Saudi dealer network means inconsistent parts availability and longer service waits versus Toyota/Hyundai/Nissan.
• The 5-year warranty merely matches competitors, not compensating for reliability concerns or poor resale value.

Resale value will be lower, as Chevrolet SUVs don't hold value in the Saudi market. Buyers prefer Japanese brands for SUVs, and the Captiva will depreciate faster than a Toyota Rush or Honda CR-V. Calculate total cost of ownership, including depreciation, not just purchase price.
