Suzuki Dzire

• The 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine produces 82 hp of power and 113 Nm of torque, sufficient for everyday use. The 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) ensures smooth gear changes without jerks.

• Fuel economy is the standout at 21 km/litre in real-world driving. The combined cycle rating sits at approximately 20 km/litre depending on driving habits. Fuel tank capacity sits at 37 litres. That is practical for long drives without frequent refuelling.

• A decent ground clearance of 145 mm, which appears modest but still works for most roads across KSA. A height-adjustable driver seat helps optimise driving position, and the steering is lighter with super response.

• The turning radius of 4.8 metres makes parking straightforward even in tight spaces. Its compact overall length of 3,870 mm, 1,735 mm width, 1,490 mm height, and 2,435 mm wheelbase, these are not a bad dimension for a compact entry-level sedan.

Some compromises

• The 82 hp engine is modest by modern standards, and the acceleration is a lot slower compared to turbocharged competitors.

• No power-steering, which means more physical effort is required during parking. The summer heat in KSA can make steering heavier during manoeuvring. Also, there is no air suspension or advanced damping, either. The suspension is basically tuned primarily for comfort over sportiness.

• As expected in this price segment, you don’t get any modern driver assistance systems.

• As one would expect, this sedan comes with a cabin that takes care of everyday driving scenarios, and the suspension is just fine to absorb any bumps on the road. The ride is quite stable at normal speeds, and the cabin feels well put together with its basic construction.

• Body control in corners is competent; you won’t notice any excessive roll through curves. The Dzire stays planted during normal driving. The Light steering effort makes parking easy; at higher speeds on the highway, steering becomes heavier for stability.

• Manual parking becomes straightforward with light steering. The compact turning radius of 4.8 metres makes tight parking manageable.

• As far as city driving goes, the compact dimensions make it super easy to go on even congested or narrow roads. This is made easy by a good driving position with great visibility of the road. On highways, though, the stability is really impressive at normal speeds. The sedan mostly stays composed when you accelerate, and wind noise is noticeable but not a big deal.

Some compromises

• The suspension is firm, and you can feel speed bumps inside the cabin. Suzuki needs to work on the cabin insulation, not the best. There is no adaptive damping or sophisticated suspension tuning, and so comfort is the focus on practicality over luxury.

• Engine noise is noticeable under acceleration. The 1.2L engine works harder when pushed.

• Fabric seats are standard on GL trim, the leather ones are available on the GLX trim. Seats provide decent support for daily commuting, and adjustable headrests in the rear seat are standard.

• The 8-inch touchscreen, with USB, AUX, and SD card connectivity on higher trims, plus Bluetooth available on GLX for hands-free calling.

• The audio experience is managed by 4 speakers with decent quality, nothing premium, but just fine for daily listening. Manual climate control is standard, and the single-zone air conditioning keeps all passengers comfortable. The rear air conditioning outlets ensure rear passengers stay cool.

• A manual sunroof available on select models, perhaps a first in the segment, which opens up the cabin for fresh air. It uses a simple hand-crank operation on base models.

• Basic interior features include cup holders, door pockets, and map reading lamps, and so you assume practical and functional.

• 15-inch alloy wheels on GLX trim add visual appeal. 14-inch steel wheels on GL trim are more economical. Electric door mirrors on all trims with side turn signals. Manual adjustment for door mirror is available on base GL.

• Luggage capacity sits at approximately 268 litres behind the rear seats, central locking on all doors, and power windows on all trims. Remote keyless entry on GLX and push-button start on higher trims.

• The chrome-plated radiator grille adds a touch of style, the LED daytime running lights on top trims and the halogen headlamps provide adequate illumination. Two-tone interior options are available.

Overall, the Dzire is honest in its execution. No pretence or unnecessary features. Practical transportation without fluff, with a minimum dashboard design, but clean and functional. No fancy ambient lighting or trendy design elements.

What we know

• High-tensile steel structure provides structural rigidity, and crumple zones manage impact energy during collisions.

• Six airbags are standard on all trims: dual front, front side, and dual curtain airbags. Full coverage for occupant protection from multiple angles. Three-point seat belts on all seats with pre-tensioners and an Emergency locking function provide restraint during sudden braking.

• Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution prevents wheel lockup. Brake Assist enhances pressure during emergencies.

• The Traction Control is a feature that is essential to deal with slippery surfaces, while the immobiliser system avoids unauthorised vehicle access. The Central locking on all doors enhances security.

• Rear view camera on GLX trim, Parking sensors front and rear on higher and ISOFIX child seat anchors are some features that improve the overall safety in protecting you and your family at all times.

What to watch out for

• A 5-star Global NCAP rating is excellent and independently verified. Exceeds many competitors in its class.

• No modern ADAS features present, or adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, or lane keeping assist.

• Suzuki's KSA service centers are limited compared to Toyota or Honda. That means fewer service points and could result in longer wait times during peak seasons. However, parts availability is reliable, but delivery can be slower.

• The Dizre is offered with a standard 3-year warranty and is modest compared to competitors offering 5-7 year coverage. Extended warranty plans are available at an additional cost.

• In terms of build quality, the Dzire uses simpler construction methods. Panel gaps and fitment are adequate but not luxury-level tight.
